Margaret Rohde Obituary

Margaret Louise Rohde, 75, a retired teacher and longtime Lubbock resident, died surrounded by family and friends Wednesday, January 2 after a brief illness and complications from surgery. Her friends are invited to a memorial service at 4 p.m. Monday, January 7, at Agape United Methodist Church at 1215 Slide Road.

Margaret was born August 8, 1943, in San Diego, Calif., to Bismark Henry Rohde and Nettie Frances Shaunfield Rohde. The family moved to White Settlement, Texas, three years later and then to Fort Worth, where Margaret graduated from Arlington Heights High School in 1961.

She graduated in 1965 from North Texas State University with a bachelor’s degree in elementary education and then completed a master’s degree in mid-level management in 1968. She moved to Lubbock and taught for 36 years at Hodges Elementary School. Margaret initially taught social studies and music before becoming the school technology administrator.

Margaret was an original member of the Lubbock Chorale and sang in the First Baptist Church choir for 40 years. She was a docent in the early days of the National Ranching Heritage Center and a life member of the Hodges Parent-Teacher Association. She was involved in the Lubbock Community Theater and a local Bear Collectors group.

Margaret served in the Llano Estacado Emmaus Community for 14 years and was active in Bible Study Fellowship. She loved her “Circle of Friends” Life Group at Southcrest Baptist Church and claimed Nehemiah 8:10—“the joy of the Lord is your strength”—as her life verse. Margaret never met a stranger, and interacting with people was her favorite hobby.

Survivors include her sister Mary Lee Rohde of Fort Worth, a large number of Rohde and Shaunfield cousins, her longtime best friend Elizabeth Maxson of Garland, her “heart sister” Debbie Skeens, and all the Skeens and Prindles she considered family.

Memorials may be made to the Llano Estacado Emmaus Community at P.O. Box 65116, Lubbock, Texas 79464 or the Helping Hands Ministry at Southcrest Baptist Church, 3801 S. Loop 289, Lubbock, Texas 79423.
