David Scroggins Obituary

David Leon Scroggins- “Big David, Papaw”

On Thursday the 11th, David Leon Scroggins, affectionately known as “Big David” and “Papaw”, passed away peacefully surrounded by all his family at the age of 67.

David was born in Plainview, TX October 31st, 1954 and raised by his parents Dessie and Donald McNeely. After High school he married Debbie Fortner Scroggins and they raised four amazing sons, David, Don Paul, Brandon, and Bradley in Wolfforth, TX.

Big David loved his family and there was never a challenge that he shied away from. He believed in a work-hard/play-hard life. When he was working, he expected his boys to be working. He truly fixer of all things. Whether it was rebuilding a motor or building a barn loft, Big David was always right there in the middle of the work. He also attended or coached every sport that his boys played. They and their friends all wanted to be with him as he shared crazy stories of lessons learned the hard way. Wherever he was he typically was the neighborhood patrol, he never met a stranger. He loved gardening, if asked he told people his favorite plant was a tomato.  He could always find a golf course, funny enough he always came home with more balls than he started with.

Big David also loved fishing and he combined his passions for family and fishing to create lasting memories, returning to east Texas for family reunions, where he would fish in the rain with his mom…because that was the best fishing and taking annual trips to Lake Texoma, where he would teach anyone that listened the right way to put on stink bait. Big David was always up for a good prank, usually serving as the instigator. He particularly enjoyed picking on his daughters-in-law and each of his grandchildren held a special place in his heart. They all have good stories of trips to Whataburger, McDonalds and such where they came home with chocolate and a toy.  He will be greatly missed for his orneriness, his honesty and above all, his love.

Big David’s parents, brother Donnie and sister Debra preceded him in death. He is survived by his ex-wife Debbie Fortner Scroggins, his four children and their families, including David Scroggins, his wife Anita and their daughters Evelyn and Audrey of Port Lavaca, TX, Don Paul Scroggins, his wife Jessica and their children Kirsten, Kade, Harper, William and Bryson of Wolfforth, TX and Bangor, ME, Brandon Scroggins, and wife Jennifer and their children Kalli, Brinlee and Nolan of Lubbock, Bradley Scroggins, his wife Megan and their sons Braxton and Bentley of Wolfforth, TX. Big David is also survived by one brother Dauvin McNeely of Longview, TX, wonderful sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, and many grand-dogs.

A funeral service will be held on Monday, August 15th at the First Baptist Church of Wolfforth, TX beginning with visitation at 10:00am followed by services officiated by Mark McMillan, at 11:00 am Graveside service and burial will be at the Wolfforth Cemetery.
