Maria Hanley Obituary

Maria Cantu Hanley, age 81 received her promotion to be with our Lord on March 18, 2023. Mom was born on April 15, 1941, to Jesus and Antonia Cantu in Los Indios, TX. Mom lived in several states including Texas, Ohio, Tennessee and Florida. Although mom never passed a 6th grade school level, she taught her children the importance of a hard work ethic. I remembered how proud she was when she received her GED as an adult. Mom married John S. Rizo and together they had 6 children. Later in life mom remarried William Hanely and they stayed married until his death in 2013. I had the pleasure of moving mom to Lubbock in Aug of 2021. What a blessing it has been having her in my daily life these past 2 years. She was a tiny lady who was fierce, determined, sassy, stubborn, independent, hardworking, caring and one of the biggest prayer warriors I know. Mom is survived by 6 adult children. Teresa Hernandez of Toledo, OH, Joe Rizo of Lebanon, OH, Delia (Jeff) Maddox of Lubbock, TX, Alfonso (Sandra) Rizo of Charlotte, TN, Maria Zavala of Harlingen, TX, Juannito Rizo of San Antonio, TX, many grandchildren, great-children, nieces and nephews. Mom was one of twelve, 6 siblings who have since passed, Maria, Vicente, Josefa, Dolores, Ramon, and Rosa. Living siblings include Maria Carbajal of Wisconsin, Jesus Cantu of Florida, San Juana Cantu of Texas, Jose Santiago Cantu of Texas, and Evangelina Cantu Beraza of Florida. Thank you to Monterey Church of Christ and Active Retirees, Thursdays was her favorite weekday. Hillcrest Manor neighbors and prayer group, she loved socializing and her prayer ladies. American Star Home Health Care nurses and especially Nurse Lisa Hays. Special Thanks to Windmill Village Rehab and Care Center Staff, nurses and aids. Interim HealthCare Hospice and their staff. A family memorial time will be scheduled later this week in San Benito, Tx. The family encourages donations in Maria’s memory to Monterey Church of Christ Lubbock, Texas
